Boy meets girl. Boy almost lets the girl get away. Boy makes sure the girl sticks around with a trip to Jewels on Ninth.

It’s a tale as old as time—Just a boy from Wasa and a girl from Cranbrook. Despite their proximity and their eventual love, Jadi Swanson and Sean Pickering almost missed out on each other.

Although they attended school in different communities, Sean and Jadi did eventually meet in 2013. Jadi was living in Lethbridge at the time. She moved back to Cranbrook shortly afterwards, but the two of them lost touch. They didn’t reconnect until 2019, which is when the relationship solidified for the long term.

“I think my favourite time that we get to spend together is on our days off where we can sleep in, enjoy our coffee —we love coffee!—and make breakfast together,” said Jadi.

Starting toward forever at Jewels on Ninth

Jadi naturally got excited when, in the fall of 2021, Sean asked her to meet him at Jewels on Ninth.

“I want to know your ring finger size,” said Sean, “because it’s obviously going to happen one day.”

One day came half a year later.

It was their three-year dating anniversary. The couple’s close friends, Tassidy Doyle and Evan Revie, were recruited to help out. The four friends headed out for a ‘just’ a photoshoot on a chilly April day.

Chilly day and warm love

“I had a feeling it was going to happen, but I kept it to myself because I didn’t want to get my hopes up!” said Jadi.

After shooting some photos on the river below Fort Steele, Jadi considered calling it quits because of the wind and weather. Tassidy had a blanket in her car that she was using between shots.

However, Jadi was so grateful she agreed to go to Norbury Lake for a few more photos.

“We walked down to the dock, and Sean asked me to turn towards him and hold his hands,” said Jadi. “My heart was beating! My response was ‘do I turn and look at Tassidy for a picture or do I look at you?””

“Look at me,” replied Sean. Then he got down on one knee and asked Jadi to marry him.

Careful planning pays off

The couple will always have beautiful photos of the moment, thanks to Sean’s plans.

Once they returned home, Jadi had another surprise waiting for her in the form of an engagement party. Sean must have been very confident that he would receive a yes!

Now the couple is looking forward to another big event—their “I do’s” at Sean’s family ranch. It will bring their engagement story full circle, from that day when Sean asked Jadi to meet him at Jewels on Ninth.
