Still happily married 25 years after a spur-of-the-moment proposal in the Jewels on Ninth store

Twila and Joerg Kamp not only bought their ring at Jewels on Ninth—they were engaged right in the store! Way back in 1996 these two Creston residents had stopped in to look at Bulova and Tag Heuer watches. “Somehow we got looking at rings,” said Twila, who has now been married to Joerg for over 25 years. “I was really liking one particular ring, and when [store owner] Brian took the ring out of the case, my husband got down on his knee and proposed.”

The couple had been together since 1990 after meeting at a friend’s wedding. After more than five years together, they were talking about settling down and starting a family. Joerg’s proposal came at just the right moment. “Of course, I said yes!” said Twila, who remembers the exact date when Joerg popped the question, though she admitted, “It’s somewhat of a blur.”

The ring that turned her head still shines on her finger. It’s yellow gold with three beautiful sparklers. After she said yes, Twila and Joerg started planning November nuptials. “That year we had a foot and a half of snow,” said Twila. “It was tough getting people out to the wedding!”

The Kamps still live in Creston, though they have made many trips back to Joerg’s homeland of Germany. They have raised two sons, the youngest of whom is 18 now. They love to travel and have trips planned to Italy and Spain in the near future.

Twila can sum up the key to their long-lasting marriage in one word: communication. Good thing Joerg communicated his love to her more than 25 years ago on that special trip to Jewels on Ninth.
